How the ranking works
Most “best credit card” lists rank by headline reward rate or welcome bonus. A 10% rate capped at ₹200 a month is worth less than 2% with no cap once you spend more than ₹10,000 in that category — and a ₹10,000 annual fee wipes out a lot of points. So we compute a yearly rupee figure for you: your spend, split the way you told us, through each card's category rates, caps and excluded spends, valued the way you redeem, minus the annual fee (unless your spend crosses the card's waiver threshold) and minus forex markup if you spend abroad.
If you sometimes carry a balance, interest of roughly 3–4% a month outweighs any reward, so those results are sorted by the lowest published interest rate first. Cards whose points have no published rupee value, and cards we couldn't read reliably, are never recommended.
Frequently asked questions
- How is “saved a year” calculated?
- Your monthly spend is split across the categories you picked (biggest first), and every card’s published reward rules are applied to it — category rates, monthly and statement caps, excluded spends and how you like to redeem. Then the annual fee is subtracted, unless your yearly spend crosses that card’s own fee-waiver threshold, and forex markup on spend abroad is subtracted too. Open “How we calculated this” on any card to see each line.
- Why is the saving a range, not one number?
- You told us a spend band, not an exact amount, so every card is worked out at the low, middle and high end of your band. Cards are ranked by the middle. If a different card would win at either end, we say so as a “close call”.
- Is this ranking sponsored?
- No. No bank pays for a position and the order comes only from the ₹ figure. Cards whose reward value we can’t establish from published rules are left out rather than guessed.
- Why isn’t a co-brand card like IndianOil, IndiGo or Swiggy at the top?
- Their big rates only pay at one brand. We count only part of your category spend at that brand’s rate, because most people don’t spend all of it there. If you are loyal to one brand, that brand’s co-brand card may be worth more than shown.
- Will I be approved for these cards?
- We don’t know and don’t ask — eligibility depends on your income, credit history and the bank’s own policy. These are cards that may suit how you spend; the bank decides approval.
- Are welcome gifts, lounge visits and milestone bonuses in the number?
- Milestone bonus points and vouchers are — but only when your yearly spend actually unlocks them, at face value, and never more than 5% of your spend. One-time welcome gifts, lounge visits and “up to” discounts are not: they’re real but uneven, and putting a rupee value on them would be a guess.
